1027 - Son of Judith of Britanny and of Richard II, he succeeds his brother Richard III
After crushing various attempts at rebellion and re-establishing his authority, he takes control of French Vexin. Then, in order to re-establish the son of Ethelred II and Emma, he leads a first seaborne expedition to England but his fleet is dispersed by storms before reaching English shores. Pressure from rival powers and the emergence of a feudal society provoke the state of crisis which marks his reign which his son William will inherit.
1035 – He undertakes the Great Pilgrimage to Jerusalem and dies in Nicea during his return.
